SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol used to connect to a server and execute different tasks using a command line. The protocol is preferred by many skilled users, because the information transmitted over it is encrypted, so it may not be intercepted on the way by a third party. SSH access may be employed for a variety of things depending on the type of hosting account. With a shared hosting account, for instance, SSH is one of several ways to import/export a database or to upload a file when the hosting server allows for it. In case you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH may be used for pretty much everything - you could install software or restart certain services like the web server or the database server that run on the machine. SSH is used primarily with UNIX-like Platforms, but there are clients which allow you to employ the protocol if your laptop or computer is running a different OS as well. The connection is established on TCP port 22 by default and the remote web server always listens for incoming connections on that port even though lots of service providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Shared Hosting

When you have a shared hosting account with our company and you would like to deal with your content remotely using SSH, you can receive SSH access to the account via your Hepsia Control Panel. If your package deal doesn't provide this feature by default, you can easily add it with a few clicks from the Upgrades menu. Within the SSH section of the CP, you will see the host, the port number and the username which you should use when you connect to the account. You can also pick what password you would like to use, as it does not need to be the same as the one for the account. We've prepared a number of Help articles where you can find each of the commands that you'll be able to use with a shared hosting plan, as well as examples of how they are used. Also, if SSH access is enabled for your account, you will be able to establish a Secure FTP (SFTP) connection using a standard client such as FileZilla, for instance.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

SSH access is available by default with some of our semi-dedicated server solutions, while with others you can easily include it through the hosting Control Panel if needed - even just for the current month. In either case, you'll be able to activate and de-activate the function with just one mouse click from the SSH section of the Control Panel. In the same place, you will see the server name, the port number and the username needed to connect to our platform. You'll also find a box where you can type in the password that you would like to use, because it doesn't need to be the same as the one you use to log into the CP. For better protection, you could also change it as often as you need. A complete list of the commands which can be executed in a semi-dedicated account is supplied in our Knowledge Base, along with the syntax and a couple of instances. An extra feature after SSH access is enabled will be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP through any FTP client that supports this sort of connections.
